On the island of Samos, in the area of Palaikastro, the Church of the Transfiguration stands as a quiet witness to the Byzantine era. Its Greek name, Ι. Ναός Μεταμόρφωσης Σωτήρα, ties the building to its setting, and its modest stone form suggests centuries of continuous worship. East of the village, near the Valouka field, excavations in 1997 revealed the vestiges of a quarry and an unfinished column, evidence of the stoneworking that once shaped this landscape. The artifacts, columns left mid-carving, connect the church to the island's longer building traditions.
