In Markopoulo, East Attica, the Church of St. Peter of Daglas carries Byzantine devotion on ground once belonging to the Classical deme of Hagnous, a landscape layered with ancient history. Excavations across eleven campaigns between 1971 and 2006 revealed family tombs of the Archaic and Classical periods and ceramic material of Classical and Hellenistic-Roman date within subterranean chambers. The church itself preserves frescoes, and restoration work has helped safeguard its paintings. Standing here, a traveler meets centuries stacked almost bodily: pagan burial, Roman pottery, and Orthodox wall painting sharing one quiet Attic hillside.
