The Church of St. Nicholas stands in Ano Arkhanes, a village in the Heraklion region whose roots reach back to antiquity. This Byzantine church occupies ground of remarkable historical depth, close to the site of ancient Arkhanes, which flourished from the second millennium BCE through the Classical period and into the twentieth century. Nine documented archaeological objects from the area testify to this long continuity of settlement. To visit is to stand where generations have worshipped and lived, layer upon layer, from Bronze Age beginnings to the present day.
