In Korthion, on the southern reaches of Andros, the Church of St. Nicholas stands as a quiet testament to the island’s Byzantine past. Its stones belong to an era when small Aegean churches anchored the daily life of their communities, and here the building still holds that role in the landscape. In 2005, rescue excavations conducted by the Second Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities in the ground west and north of the church brought to light finds that deepen our understanding of its Byzantine setting and of how settlement clustered around such sacred places.
