The Church of St. Nicholas in Gavrion, on the island of Andros, is a Byzantine-era church whose roots reach deep into the island's past. Archaeological survey work carried out in 1989 in northwestern Andros recorded the church's setting and identified several sites in the surrounding area, linking the building to a landscape inhabited since classical and Hellenistic times. Standing near the site of the ancient port settlement of Gaurion, the church carries centuries of continuous local history into the present day.
