The Church of St. Demetrius stands in Eastern Mani, Laconia, near the ancient sites of Larysion and Kranae on the slopes of Mount Koumarou. Its Byzantine origins place it within a landscape layered with centuries of human presence. Between 1973 and 2010, seventeen excavations revealed traces of occupation spanning Roman times to the modern period, including a small underground hollow and structural remains, along with Roman artifacts and tombs. Together these finds trace the long continuity of life around this hillside sanctuary, where worship and settlement have endured across the ages.
