At the edge of Lakkoi in the Chania region of Crete stands the Church of Saint George, a Byzantine church whose stonework and simple form speak to a long history of worship on the island. Modest in scale and built for a small congregation, it belongs to the centuries when Byzantine builders raised countless such chapels across Crete. Its survival through the island's many later upheavals is a quiet testament to a layered past, and to the persistence of faith in a rural landscape.
