The Church of Panagia Vrefotrofou, dedicated to the Virgin as nurturer of infants, stands in the Lasithi region of Crete. Its Greek name means All Holy One who feeds children, a tender title for a quiet stone survivor of the Byzantine era, dated to around 1400. Churches of this kind in mountainous Lasithi were typically small, single-aisled and barrel-vaulted, built from local stone by village hands rather than grand patrons. To step inside is to meet centuries of devotion in a modest, intimate space.
