The Church of Panagia Kalou, also known as the Assumption of the Virgin, gives its name to the village of Panagia Kalou on Santorini, part of the Municipality of Thira. The village lies about 8 kilometres northeast of Fira at an altitude of 120 metres. This Byzantine church holds a special place in local memory: its construction marked the end of the Era of Evil, a period of volcanic activity between 1649 and 1650 that shaped the island's landscape and its people's lives.
