Set in the Mani landscape of Laconia, within the Municipality of Eastern Mani, the Church of Holy Trinity is a Byzantine church whose stones carry more history than its modest scale suggests. Excavations in 1994 at the nearby spot of Pano Horos uncovered remains of Roman buildings and tombs, evidence that this ground was settled and used for burial long before the Byzantine church rose. Roman materials were also reused in the church's own fabric, a practical habit of later builders that physically binds the Byzantine present to the Roman past.
