High above the Gulf of Mirabello in eastern Crete, the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos and St. John the Theologian keeps watch over the village of Kavousi. Its walls date to 1847, carrying the Byzantine building tradition of the island into the modern age. The setting is layered with far older history: the hill of Azoria nearby preserves traces of Archaic and Hellenistic settlement, so a visit here places a nineteenth-century church within a landscape inhabited since antiquity.
