Near Chania, the Holy Monastery of Chrysopigi, also called Zoodochos Pigi, was founded at the end of the sixteenth century by the doctor Ioannis Hartofylakas on the site of an earlier, smaller monastery. Its buildings form an oblong quadrilateral, with a triconch, domed catholicon at the center, extended in 1863 with a narthex and side chapels. A protected building in Greece, it preserves the layered character of Byzantine monastic life, where worship, healing, and hospitality gathered within a single walled enclosure.
