High in the green valley country west of Sarchos village, this ancient cave opens into Crete's limestone heart. Its passages run roughly two kilometres into the mountain, dropping some 225 metres below the surface, a hidden world that drew people in antiquity. The village itself sits at about 240 metres above sea level, some 22 kilometres from Heraklion and 11 kilometres southwest of Agios Myron. To stand at the entrance is to sense why such places mattered to the ancients: dark, deep, and enduring, they were understood as thresholds between the everyday world and something older and less easily named.
