High above the sea near Tsoutsouros, some 57 kilometers south of Heraklion, the Cave of Eileithyia opens into the hillside at a place the ancients called Inatos. People came here across an extraordinary span of time, from the early and middle Geometric years through Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, and late antique eras, leaving offerings in a sanctuary tied to childbirth and its goddess. Below, the coast holds traces of a Minoan settlement and the ruins of Minoan and Roman buildings, layers of a long-lived sacred landscape.
