Castle of Tselevinia

Κάστρο στα Τσελεβίνια

On the southeastern flank of the Troizinia region, across from the little Tselevinia islets and east of the village of Pergari, stand the remnants of a coastal fortress whose past is almost entirely mute. No records or documents survive to name its builders or tell its story, yet the masonry resembles Venetian work in the Cyclades, particularly at Kato Kastro and Ostodosia on Andros. Given its remoteness, even today, and its likely easier communication with Venetian strongholds across the Aegean than with the Frankish castles of the mainland, a Venetian origin in the 13th or 14th century seems plausible. It may have cooperated with the nearby Venetian fortress of Thermisi, active from the 14th to 18th centuries. Ceramic finds and building style support this dating, though its life was probably brief, as nautical charts omit it. The surviving wall, roughly 100 metres long, guarded the peninsula's northern landward approach; it is 1.5 metres thick and stands at most 3.5 metres high. Among the ruins sits a comparatively modern church to Panagia.
