High in the Rethymno countryside, this carved reservoir belongs to the world of the Minoans, the Bronze Age culture that shaped Crete between roughly 3000 and 1100 BCE. Excavations here between 1993 and 2009 revealed a closed deposit of Middle Minoan III pottery, along with transitional Middle Minoan III to Late Minoan I wares, fine clues to how people lived and worked in this landscape. The same investigations also uncovered Roman-period baths, a reminder that this quiet spot drew communities across many centuries.
