Near Missolonghi in Aetolia, the Calydon Fortress preserves the layered remains of a stronghold whose story stretches from the Early Geometric era through the Late Antique period, with Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic phases in between. Ancient Calydon was a city of Aetolia, remembered as both sanctuary and settlement, and its walls today stand only partially, worn by centuries. Excavation at Chondreika, begun in 2008 and continuing under the Ephorate of Antiquities, keeps drawing new detail from the ground.
