Bull of Oreon

Ταύρος Ωρεών, Εύβοια

The Bull of Oreon is a large marble statue of a bull that once formed part of a funerary monument from the fourth century B.C. Raised from the harbour of Oreoi in 1965, it is now displayed in the town. Oreoi lies on the northwest coast of Euboea, named for the ancient town of Oreus, beside the strait linking the Aegean Sea with the North Euboean Gulf. The site spans archaic through Roman times, and the bull endures as a powerful emblem of the region's long history.
