The Bourtzi of Methoni guards a rock that reaches into the sea in the southwestern Peloponnese, a site occupied from classical and Hellenistic times through the Roman era. The Venetians fortified the city after 1209, cutting an artificial moat to separate it from the land and building a heavily protected acropolis on the north side. Beyond the walls, a small islet lies sheltered by an octagonal tower, the Bourtzi itself. Homer knew the place as Pedasus, one of the cities Agamemnon offered Achilles, and its long story runs from myth to the present day.
