The Archaeological Museum of Marathon, housed in a modest building in the village of Vranas, opened its doors in 1975 and gathers finds from a plain thick with ancient memory. Excavations in 1971 and 1972 in the Vrana region, prompted by the chance discovery of a funerary stele in 1967, uncovered an important burial structure, and today the museum's most celebrated exhibit is the reconstructed burial mound of the Plataeans, the Athenians' allies at Marathon. Stelae and artifacts from the second millennium BCE through Roman times trace the long life of the surrounding landscape.
