Archaeological Museum of Dion

Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Δίου

The Archaeological Museum of Dion, established in 1983, displays finds from the excavations of the ancient city of Dion, the religious centre of the Macedonians at the foot of Mount Olympus. Exhibits are organised by place of discovery, covering the city centre, public buildings, sanctuaries and necropolis. The collection spans from the 6th century BC to the 5th century AD, with most artefacts dating from the Hellenistic and Roman eras (roughly 3rd century BC to 3rd century AD). Notable objects include a marble cult statue of Aphrodite Hypolympidia (2nd century BC), a cult statue of Zeus Hypsistos with a marble eagle, and marble slabs with carved footprints called bemata (2nd century AD). The upper floor presents finds from other sites in Pieria and houses the hydraulis, an ancient hydraulic organ. An educational video on the history of the excavations is available.
