The Archaeological Museum of Volos, known as the Athanasakeion, stands among Greece's oldest museums. Its neoclassical marble building, completed in 1909, was financed by the merchant Alexios Athanassakis, who then presented it to the Greek State. Within, collections drawn from early twentieth-century and modern excavations across Thessaly bring the region's deep past to life. Neolithic finds from Dimini and Sesklo are a highlight, including jewellery and household utensils that reveal the sophistication of these prehistoric communities. A visit here connects the modern city with thousands of years of Thessalian history.
