High above the Libyan Sea in the wilds of southwest Crete, the ruins known as the Ancient Theatre or Odeon of Lissos belong to a once-thriving ancient town. Lissos flourished from Hellenistic and Roman times into Late Antiquity, serving as a harbor for the city of Elyrus, and inscriptions have confirmed its name. In 1994 a European program undertook cleaning, survey, and topographic recording of the ancient city in the Aghios Kyrikos valley west of Sougia, revealing traces of a community that endured for centuries at this remote coastal outpost.
