On a headland above the Euboean Strait, the Ancient Theatre of Rhamnous forms part of the best-preserved Attic deme site in Greece, lying northwest of Agia Marina in the municipality of Marathon. Rhamnous was an ancient city famed above all for its sanctuary of Nemesis, the avenging goddess, her most important sanctuary in ancient Greece. Strategically placed on sea routes, it was fortified, and excavations between 1976 and 2011 revealed fortifications, harbors, houses, temples, and tombs, tracing the life of a classical city across its long history.
