On the island of Kefalonia, near Fiskardo, the Ancient Theatre of Panormos carries the cultural memory of the ancient town of Panormos across more than two thousand years. Its stones were first set in the Hellenistic period, between 323 and 31 BCE, and the theatre remained in use through the Roman era, in the first and fourth centuries CE. That long life speaks of an Ionian island community that kept returning to the same place for performance and gathering, a classical heritage visitors can still sense today.
