In the hills near Naoussa in Imathia, the Ancient Theatre of Mieza belongs to a classical and Hellenistic town remembered as the place where Aristotle taught the young Alexander the Great between 343 and 340 BCE. Philip II of Macedon hired the philosopher and gave him the Temple of the Nymphs as a classroom. Mieza took its name from a figure in Macedonian mythology, daughter of Beres, and was home to Peucestas, companion of Alexander. Excavations from 1972 onward, including work in 2001 on a fourth-century BCE complex, continue to reveal the site.
