High above Ierapetra in eastern Crete, the Ancient Theatre of Hierapytna preserves the remains of a gathering place where this important Cretan settlement once came together for dramatic performances and public assemblies. Raised in antiquity, its stones recall an era when theatre and civic life were inseparable, and the architecture itself expressed the values of the community that built it. Today the site invites visitors to read those values in the surviving fabric and to imagine the audiences who once filled it, in a landscape that still overlooks the town below.
