On the northern shore of Lemnos in the northern Aegean, the Ancient Theatre of Hephaisteia stands amid the ruins of a city once sacred to Hephaistos, the god of metallurgy, whose cult was maintained here. This was the island's capital from the 8th to 6th centuries BCE, and the theatre itself dates from between the late 5th and early 4th century BCE, its stones carrying the traces of archaic, classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and late antique life. Only ruins remain, yet they evoke the civic pride of a maritime city where worship, assembly, and performance once shared the same ground.
