High in the mountains of western Crete, the ancient theatre of Elyros belongs to a city that once commanded the slopes between Cydonia and Lissus, with its harbour at Syia on the south coast. Its stones span the Hellenistic and Roman centuries into late antiquity, when the theatre served a community prosperous enough to send a bronze goat to Delphi, the work Pausanias recorded there. Elyros was also the birthplace of Thaleta, a name that still echoes through the mountain village of Rodovani nearby.
