On the west bank of the Achelous River, roughly ten miles from its mouth, the Ancient Theater of Oiniadai rises from the ruins of one of Acarnania's most important towns. Nature and human craft fortified Oeniadae together: deep, extensive marshes surrounded the city and made it inaccessible to invaders in winter, while its fertile territory, the district of Paracheloitis, stretched along both sides of the river. The theater itself spans classical, Hellenistic-Republican, and Roman periods, a layered witness to centuries of civic life in a city that geography protected and prosperity sustained.
