The Ancient Theater of Gitana lies within the ruins of Gitanae, a city of ancient Epirus that Livy placed near Corcyra, roughly ten miles from the coast. Gitanae served as a meeting place for the Epirote League, and no other ancient writer names it. Excavations between 1985 and 2015 uncovered houses, roads, and a stoa of the agora, built around the middle of the third century BC. The site preserves layers from the classical through Hellenistic and Republican periods, a quiet record of a regional center whose role in Epirote affairs outlasted its scant mention in history.
