The most perfect theatre of antiquity, and the best preserved. Built into a hillside in the 4th century BC beside the sanctuary of Asklepios, god of healing, it seats around fourteen thousand in fifty-five tiers and has acoustics that are still being explained: a coin dropped in the orchestra is audible on the back row. Recent work credits the limestone seats, which filter low-frequency murmur while carrying the voice. Patients came to the sanctuary to be cured by dreams, and the theatre was part of the treatment.
