On the coast at modern Kavala lie the remains of ancient Antisara, a settlement that flourished through the Archaic and Classical periods. Rescue excavations between 1977 and 1996 revealed houses built in two phases, one from the late sixth to fifth century BCE and another from the late fifth to fourth century BCE. A later dig near the shore uncovered a section of the city's defensive wall, 2.10 metres thick, evidence of a community that guarded its shoreline. Floors, walls and pottery trace centuries of continuous life here, where the ancient world met the northern Aegean.
