The Roman amphitheatre of Gortyna, in the Heraklion region of Crete, reflects the city's prominence in the Roman period, when Gortyna flourished between the first and third centuries CE. Excavations carried out between 1984 and 2004, including work in the early 2000s directed by scholars from the University of Bologna alongside the 13th Byzantine Antiquities Ephorate, gradually uncovered the monument's remains. Finds of Byzantine churches, floors, and mosaics show that this ancient site had a long afterlife, layered across archaic, classical, late-antique, and modern periods.
