Ammouda

On a sandy spit at Trani Ammouda beach, near the village of Agios Nikolaos in Chalkidiki, stand the rather poor remains of a small Byzantine fortified complex. Known as “Agios Nicolaos Chrysokamaros,” it served as a dependency of the Zografou monastery on Mount Athos, visible across the bay. Built in the 14th century, the site was a coastal fortress guarding the monastic holdings. Today only fragments of the defensive walls and part of the main tower survive, the rest having crumbled into the sand. The location, a slight protrusion of beach, leaves the ruins exposed to the elements, and little of the original layout can be traced. For the curious visitor, it offers a quiet, windswept glimpse of late Byzantine monastic power reaching across the water, though patience is needed to piece together its former form from the scant stones that remain.
