The abandoned monastery of Agios Athanasios stands at Fourkari, facing the islet of Soupia across the water from Hydra. Its origins are uncertain, though the surviving fortifications and structures point to the post-Byzantine era, possibly the 17th or 18th century. Unlike many comparable monasteries, its protective wall was never repaired, and the complex now sits in rather poor condition. The site was already deserted when a private owner purchased the land in 1920, and no records survive to clarify its history or precise construction date. What remains is a fortified monastic enclosure, its defensive perimeter still traceable but crumbling, offering a quiet, unresolved glimpse of a religious community that once sought both isolation and security on this rocky shore.
