Ag. Andreas

The little island of Agios Andreas, lying off Zakynthos' northwestern coast, once carried a monastery whose fortifications now survive only in a rather poor state. Together with a neighbouring islet, it forms the small group known as the Diaporia. The monastery was founded in 1595 by Ioannis Theodosis, and for perhaps a century it flourished before pirate raids forced its abandonment. Its walls were raised from stones quarried on the island itself, bound with mortar, a practical response to the materials at hand. What remains today is the fortification trace, a quiet testament to a religious house that could not hold its ground against the sea-borne threat. The site is now a castle-monastery in decay, its story one of brief prosperity and swift decline, told through crumbling stone and the memory of a founder's ambition.
