On Monte Smith, three kilometres southwest of modern Rhodes town, the ancient upper town commands the island's west coast. The Acropolis of Rhodes took shape from the fifth century BC and flourished through Hellenistic and Roman times, when its sanctuaries crowned the heights. Here stood the Temple of Athena Polias and Zeus Polieus and the Temple of Apollo, guardians of the city below. Beneath these sacred terraces lie the stadium, the odeon and the gymnasium, where Rhodes trained its citizens in body and mind. Partially standing today, the site still conveys the ambition of a great maritime city.
