Perched above the east coast of Laconia near modern Palaia Monemvasia, the Acropolis of Epidauros Limera guards a site inhabited across an extraordinary span of centuries, from archaic and classical times through the Hellenistic, Roman, and early Byzantine eras. Excavations between 1982 and 1997 brought to light Byzantine churches, floors, and mosaics, along with obsidian and walls, while a small Early Christian basilica was identified near the bay of Saint-Paul. Partially preserved today, the citadel rewards travelers drawn to layered ruins where Greek antiquity and early Christianity meet above the sea.
