The Acropolis of Axou Mylopotamou is a layered citadel in Crete's Mylopotamos Municipality, occupied from Archaic through Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and Ottoman times. Excavations between 1983 and 2006 revealed substantial architecture, including walls and pebble floors on the northern side at Ag. Ioannis, along with houses, tombs, and artifacts from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. A Roman tile tomb came to light in 1998. The site preserves traces of the ancient city of Axos, and its partial remains reward travelers drawn to places where many centuries settle quietly atop one another.
